Why air conditioning needs a dedicated circuit

A modern air conditioner draws 1-3.5 kW and runs for hours during the season. Older wiring was not built for that - if the AC hangs off the same circuit as the sockets or the kitchen, the fuse trips and the cable overheats. That is why AC needs its own circuit, straight from the board.

  • The fuse trips when you switch on the AC - an overloaded shared circuit
  • A warm socket or cable - the cable size is too small for the load
  • Several AC units in the same flat - each needs its own circuit
  • A new AC in an old flat - almost always needs a new circuit and protection

What we do

We prepare all the electrics for the AC, so the installer only has to hang the unit:

  • A dedicated circuit from the board with the correct cable size
  • A circuit breaker and an RCD for the AC
  • A point (socket or hard-wired) at the location of the indoor unit
  • Cabling to the outdoor unit - for the compressor on the facade or terrace
  • A check of the load and the earthing

Before the air conditioning installer comes

Many companies that sell air conditioners only mount the unit and connect the copper pipes - but they do not do the electrical circuit, or they hook you onto the nearest socket (a temporary fix that trips). It is best to have the power prepared by an electrician first, and then have the installer come. Tell us where the AC will go and we prepare the supply.

Several AC units in the same flat

If you are fitting two or three units (living room, bedroom), each needs its own circuit. That often means the old board needs upgrading to 63A or separate breakers. We tell you in advance what is needed so that nothing trips when everything runs at once.

Cost and timing

The price depends on the length of cable to the board and whether the board has room for more breakers. It is best to prepare it in spring, before the season - no rush and no surcharge for an emergency call-out in the middle of summer. Everything is agreed at a fixed price before we start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the AC installer also do the electrical circuit?

Usually not. Most companies mount the unit and connect the pipes, but the electrical circuit is an electrician's job. Some hook you onto the nearest socket - which is temporary and trips. It is best to prepare a dedicated circuit first, and then have the installer come.

Do I need a dedicated circuit for air conditioning?

For a modern AC - yes. It draws 1-3.5 kW and should not share a circuit with the sockets or the kitchen. A dedicated circuit from the board with the correct cable size, a breaker and an RCD prevents tripping and overheating.

The fuse trips when I switch on the AC - what is it?

Almost always an overloaded shared circuit - the AC comes on while another heavy appliance is running. The answer is not a bigger fuse, but a dedicated circuit for the AC with the correct cable size.

Can the power be prepared before I buy the AC?

Yes, and that is best. If you tell us where you plan the AC, we prepare the circuit and the point in spring, before the season - no rush and no surcharge for an emergency call-out in the middle of summer.
