Electric hob and cooker connection
An induction or ceramic hob and an electric cooker draw a lot - up to 7kW. That is why they do not go on an ordinary socket, but on a dedicated circuit with the correct cable size. We connect them safely, with earthing and a certificate.
Leave a requestWhy a hob does not just plug into a socket
An induction hob can draw up to 7.4kW - more than an ordinary socket or a shared circuit can carry. If the hob is hooked onto an existing socket, the cable overheats and the fuse trips (or, worse, the cable melts inside the wall). That is why a hob and cooker need a dedicated circuit straight from the board, with the correct cable size.
What the connection covers
- A dedicated circuit from the board to the hob/cooker
- The correct cable size for the power (usually 4-6 mm²)
- A connection box or hard-wiring as per the hob's instructions
- Earthing - essential, the hob is metal
- A circuit breaker of the correct rating
- Testing and a certificate that everything works safely
Single-phase or three-phase?
It depends on the hob. Smaller ones (up to ~3.7kW) run single-phase. More powerful induction hobs and cookers are often connected three-phase (400V), to spread the load evenly. The hob has a rating plate showing the power and the connection method - we read it and recommend what is best for your installation. If the board has no room or is old, you may need a new distribution board.
Old cooker → new induction hob
When an old cooker is replaced with a new induction hob, the old circuit is often thinner than a modern hob needs. In that case we fit a new dedicated circuit with the correct cable size - so the fuse does not trip and there is no overheating.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the hob be plugged into an ordinary socket?
No. An induction or ceramic hob draws too much for an ordinary socket (up to 7.4kW). It needs a dedicated circuit straight from the board, with the correct cable size - otherwise the cable overheats and there is a fire risk.
What cable does an induction hob need?
It depends on the power and the connection method (single/three-phase) - usually 4-6 mm². We read the hob's rating and fit cable of the correct size with a breaker of the correct rating.
Should I connect the hob single-phase or three-phase?
Smaller hobs run single-phase, more powerful ones are often three-phase to spread the load. The hob's rating plate shows how it is connected - we check it and advise based on your installation.
How much does it cost to connect a hob or cooker?
It depends on whether the existing circuit is suitable or a new circuit from the board is needed. We tell you the exact price on site before we start, after a quick check of the installation.
